Discovering Your History

November is National Family Stories Month. There are all kinds of different families out there, each with their own stories. This is a great time to reflect on your relationships and what you've learned from them, whether it be with family, friends, or yourself. It’s also an excellent time to learn about your history. As you do so, you’ll find that some of these stories are happy, sad, entertaining, or just interesting!

Cyprus History

Today, the Cyprus family also takes a moment to look back on its history. Established in 1928, Cyprus became the first credit union in Utah. The 22 individuals who organized the credit union all had something in common: each was an employee of the Utah Copper Company. These original members wanted a place to not only save money but also pool their savings together to lend out when needed. The founders named the credit union after the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, a place known for its copper resources since ancient times. In fact, the word “copper” has its roots in the old Latin aes cyprium, meaning “metal from Cyprus.” Today, Cyprus Credit Union continues to grow as we foster our relationships with our members, our employees, the environment, and the community here in Utah.

Family & Personal Stories

This month, take some time to learn about your family stories. Ask those close to you to share their memories or life experiences. Ask them if they are comfortable with having their stories recorded, whether it be with pen and paper or an audio recording. Don’t forget that your personal stories are important too! Share your stories with family and friends, and remember to write them down or record them.
