Making changes in your savings habits doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul of your finances. Here are some small changes you can make everyday that will help make some big changes over time.

AUTOMATIC TRANSFERS

Setting up automatic transfers to your savings account is a great way to save money with very little effort on your part. Even 10% of every paycheck can add up over time, especially if you take advantage of high-interest savings, CDs, or Money Market accounts.

START BORROWING

Instead of buying items that you may only need to use once or twice, reach out to friends and family to see if you are able to borrow it. Just remember to pay it forward by letting people borrow your things if they need to. Don’t forget to utilize places like the library where you can borrow books, DVDs, and more for free.

SHORT-TERM FINANCIAL FAST

Making slighter bigger changes but putting a cap on the length of time, no more than three weeks at a time, is a great way to get a little burst of saving. During this time, all unnecessary purchases are cut out of your budget and that money is diverted towards your savings instead.

RUN ENERGY AUDIT

There may be items around your home that are costing you money without you even realizing it. This can include drafty windows or doors that are letting heat/air conditioning out, appliances that use electricity even when turned off, old insulation, and more. Here are some more ideas on how to make your home more energy efficient to help you save money.
