Burnout is defined as being in ‘a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.’ It’s extremely common in our everyday lives, but there are some steps you can take to alleviate this feeling. Here are some tips for combating burnout.
TAKE A BREAK
While this seems like an obvious answer, many people don’t go this route. Even when they’re off the clock, they’re still answering calls, emails, and texts, constantly keeping work in the back of their mind. Even if a vacation isn’t in the cards at the moment, you can still make time to do activities that you enjoy. Set an out of office email, let your coworkers know you will be unavailable, and get ready to mentally recharge.
SCHEDULE FREE TIME
It’s easy to feel the stress creeping up when your packed daily schedule is the first thing you think of every morning. Try to schedule time each week where you just focus on you and your needs, even if it’s just fifteen minutes. Do some breathing exercises, take a walk around the neighborhood, or eat your favorite treat.
During these feelings of burnout, it’s easy to only see the negative in everything that happens around you. Seek out positive influences when you feel yourself begin to emotionally drain. Turn off the news and watch a rerun of an old sitcom instead. Put your phone away and read a book. Limit contact with those in your life who always have something to complain about. Small, simple adjustments can change your perspective on life.
Find something that you’re passionate about and find some time to dedicate yourself to it. This could be developing a new hobby or skill, learning something new, volunteering in your community, or writing a book. Anything that helps break up your ‘regular’ routine can provide the jumpstart necessary to get out of your rut.
