Creating a Morning Routine

Some of the most successful people have shared their morning routines. While they may all be different, they have one thing in common: they’re consistent. Making your mornings more constant and efficient can change your entire day. Here are some steps for creating a morning routine.

TAILOR TO YOU

There is no ‘right time’ to wake up in the morning. It depends on what works best for you. However, if you often find yourself rushing and under stress to get out the door on time, this may be a sign you need to wake up a little earlier. The more consistently you wake up at the same time, the more of a routine it will become.

DRINK WATER

After sleeping all night, your body is most likely dehydrated. Having a glass of water first thing in the morning (yes, even before your coffee) can give your body the jumpstart it needs for the day. Contrary to popular belief, ice water doesn’t ‘wake up your body’ more. In fact, its suggested you stick to room temperature first thing in the morning as it may help aid your digestion for the day.

AUTOMATE THE PROCESS

Steve Jobs was known for wearing a black turtleneck and black pants every single day. He did this intentionally so that one vital decision that we all have to make every day (what am I going to wear?) was already made for him. Having to make several choices in the morning can diminish your decision-making skills for the rest of the day. Taking options out of your morning routine will help make it run smoother. For example; set out your clothes the night before, make a meal plan so you know exactly what you’ll be eating for breakfast, and write a to-do list.

CLEAR YOUR MIND

Try and schedule a little bit of time to do something that calms and centers your mind before the hustle and bustle of the day takes over. This can be something as simple as sitting quietly for 5 minutes and focusing on your breathing. You could also write three things for which you are grateful, read a chapter of a book, do some morning stretches, etc.
